Centre 2 - The second activity, "Adopt-A-Pet" requires the student to choose one of the classified ads for pets and write a letter to their parent or guardian in order to convince them why they should be allowed to bring that pet home.

Centre 3 - The third activity, "Letter to the Editor" requires the student to either answer the letters to the editor provided OR write a new letter to the editor using one of the issues provided. Students also have the option of writing about any other issue that they feel strongly about.

RCMP investigating Facebook group over 'Kick a Ginger' day

Catherine Rolfsen and Mike Barber , Canwest News Service

Published: Thursday, November 20, 2008

"They say blonds have more fun, but it was redheads who might have got a bigger kick on Thursday, dubbed by some as Kick a Ginger Day.

Across the country, school boards had to contend with a joke from an episode of the satirical animated show South Park that has spiralled into a day of promoting violence.

RCMP in B.C. are investigating the 14-year-old administrator of a Facebook group called "National Kick a Ginger Day, are you going to do it?"

RCMP in B.C. are investigating the 14-year-old administrator of a Facebook group, pictured above, called "National Kick a Ginger Day, are you going to do it?"

The Vancouver Island boy said the group, which had nearly 5,000 members from across Canada and internationally, was only a joke and he is sorry.

The page, which urges members to "get them steel toes ready," had garnered hundreds of messages. Many were from people claiming to have already kicked redheads that day; others expressed outrage.

The page's teenage administrator said he didn't make the group, but inherited it after its original creator got in trouble.

"It was a joke," he said. "I'll message everybody and say I'm sorry that this offended people."

Comox Valley RCMP Const. Tammy Douglas said the group is being investigated and those involved could face charges.

"We do treat this sort of thing seriously," she said. "This is sort of inciting hate. It's a hate crime really."

Ironically, the day falls in the middle of the international Bullying Awareness Week.

....

n the episode of South Park in question, Ginger Kids, one character - Eric Cartman - begins a campaign against red heads, calling them soulless and inherently evil.

Brenda Morrison, a criminology professor at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C., said she was "shocked" to find out about the day.

Morrison, who has written extensively on bullying, said social networking websites such as Facebook or MySpace provide conduits that make bullying in school much easier, as they allow for information to be spread rapidly and with little supervision from adults or authorities.

"Anything that legitimizes (bullying), we should take care to control, as a community, as caring adults," she said, noting that her husband and son are redheads. "

Friends for Life

We are starting a new unit in Health and Career Education. It is called FRIENDS for Life.

Rationale:

FRIENDS for Life was created to assist children and youth at an appropriate developmental level to learn important skills and techniques to cope with and manage anxiety.
The symbolism drawn from the word FRIENDS is based on the following principles:

* The words FRIENDS helps children and youth to remember each of the skills taught throughout the program (i.e. each letter stands for a new skill learned)
* Our body is our FRIEND and tells us when we are feeling worried or nervous by giving us clues.
* It is important to learn to be our own FRIEND, and rewards ourselves when we try hard.
* It is important to make FRIENDS, so that we can build our social support network and feel happier.
* FRIENDS can help us cope with difficult situations more effectively.

There are 3 components that are taught in the FRIENDS for Life program: Learning, Cognitive, Physiological.

Skills taught:

* problem-solving skills
* coping skills
* awareness of body cues
* identification of inner thoughts
* use of positive self-talk
* techniques for challenging negative self-talk
* peer support, etc. etc.

Math Problem Solving Circles

Today we implemented math problem solving circles. Every Thursday, students will work on word problems dealing with math concepts that they will be learning/reviewing throughout the year.

Students were given a list of strategies to solve math problems. They are to read over the strategies for next Thursday.

We will also be learning about the numeracy performance standards using them in our lessons.

Mastery of the Basics Math Program

I feel that there is some confusion as to Mastery of the Basics (MotB) math program.
The goal is to have students keep working the basics of math all year long (addition, division, numeration, fractions, etc. etc.).
The Grade 7 program is a big step up from the Grade 6 program from last year. Students might not have all the background knowledge in order to do all of the Tests (for example, we haven't learned integers yet).
Students need to choose one of the subject area's to test on and study for it. They are to do the practice test and then mark themselves with the provided answer key. Another way to improve comprehension is to write their own mini-test and try to answer it or have a friend answer it and they answer one their friend wrote.
Parents are encouraged to be involved with this program (students have a yellow duotang with a number on the front - they're responsible for the duotang for the year).

From what I am seeing in class, there does not seem to be a lot of studying going on. Students are arriving on Friday not sure what they want to test on and they're trying to guess at what they think will be the easiest for them to do.

Once I have marked the tests, then I spend time with each student and give them some extra help on areas they did not understand.

Every Friday is a Mastery of the Basics Test. Tomorrow is another one. Students, please ensure that you study and that you arrive prepared.

Internet Safety

Today in class, we had two 2nd year Teacher Candidates from TRU come and do a presentation on Internet Safety. Students discussed and learned the difference between personal and private information and how important it is (especially with an adult) to sit down and set their privacy settings on all public accounts (facebook, my space, etc.).

Students learned some questions to ask when they visit a site:
1. What kind of website is this? What is it's purpose? (ex. to make money)
2. What decisions do you have to make? What information do you have to give? Who has access to that information?
3. What should you be looking out for?
4. Why or Why not?

It is very important to be aware of where they are on a site and who has access to their information and pictures.

We are also reading in class at this time a book entitled "Dear Jo". It's written from Max's perspective. Max's best friend, Leah, met someone online and decided to meet him in person and has gone missing. At the point we are at in the novel, Leah has been missing for the past 6 months. Dear Jo stands for Dear Journal as Max is supposed to write in her journal about how's she's feeling.

International Talk Like a Pirate Day

Welcome, me hearty, to the Pac Way HQ for Talk Like A Pirate Day!

International Talk Like A Pirate Day began in the mists of the 1990s, when two Yankees, John Baur (Ol' Chum Bucket) and Mark Summers (Cap'n Slappy), be talkin' like pirates all o'a sudden. They decided that, to further the noble causes of the sweet trade of piracy, September 19 each year be the day when all souls over the world should be talkin' like pirates. For years, their valiant efforts were wasted, until they contacted a man by the name of Dave Barry, who be writin' a humour column for the great masses o' landlubbers out yonder.
He showed his devotion to the cause by promoting the Day to millions of people across the world from the tropical climes of Miami, to the wild and weary shores of Thunder Bay. From thar, the media across the seven seas carried the story, and it reached every corner of the world!

Our class will be participating in International Talk Like a Pirate Day on September 19th!!
Ahoy, me matey! Dress up and join the fun! We will be having a Math Scavenger Hunt and Learning how to speak Pirate!

WELCOME TO THE START OF ANOTHER GREAT YEAR!!!!

Welcome back new and returning students. We had a great first week in our Den Groups and we're off to the races today getting started in all of our classes.

Along with the school goals, a couple of classroom goals that I would like to set for this year would be as follows:
1) ORGANIZATION – one of the ways students can be successful this year is to stay ORGANIZED. This means that effective use of the agenda is very important, keeping their desk and locker areas tidy, as well as keeping their binders/notebooks in order.
2) Leadership – the students will be required to participate in a variety of leadership roles throughout the school.
3) RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, and (positive) RELATIONSHIPS – I expect the students to be respectful to others, responsible for their actions and to build healthy and positive working relationships with their peers.
I will be communicating with you in many ways regarding your child’s progress. It is imperative that we work together to ensure that your child has a successful year. The following are a few things that will help your child off to a great start.
1. Pack up backpack the night before to ensure that AGENDA and HOMEWORK are complete and ready to bring back to school.
2. AGENDA needs to be signed everyday by a parent/guardian.
3. BE ON TIME. Bell rings at 8:20am. Punctuality is extremely important as we start our learning at 8:30am sharp.
4. Medical concerns. Please make sure that all files are up to date at the office.
5. WEBPAGE – I have built a webpage to let you and your child know what is happening in our classroom and school. There are links to other interesting websites for both students and parents throughout the year as well as an area for assignments, criteria, and due dates. This webpage is a work in progress and I would appreciate any feedback you may have about what you would like to see included on it.

http://www.pacway-robertson.blogspot.com

Organization
As organization is a key area that we want to work on this year, I would like to request that all students buy a 2-inch binder and a set of subject dividers. If this is a problem or concern at all, please do not hesitate to contact me at the school (250-851-0632) or by email: barobertson@sd73.bc.ca. I will provide students with paper and notebooks for the binder.

As we had quite a few problems with school calculators being broken last year, I would also like to request that you buy your child an inexpensive calculator (Wal-Mart has some for @$7.00).

I understand that in previous years, some students have had weekly reports done by their classroom teacher to update them and their parents on how they were progressing, what a fabulous idea! Part of our goal in Grade 7 this year is to prepare for Grade 8. After talking with the class, the students (unanimously) have requested to not have weekly reports.
I believe that if used properly, the agenda should be sufficient. I also send home interim reports mid-way through the term. However, sometimes people need a little bit of extra help. If you feel that there is any cause for concern at all, please do not hesitate to contact me and we can privately set-up a weekly report through your child or through email.

Snacks
Your child should be bringing nutritious snacks to school every day. Please do not send pop, energy drinks, ice tea, flavoured drink crystals (kool-aid or crystal light), candy, donuts, chocolate or similar foods otherwise known as “sometimes foods”. During Health and Career Ed., we talk about different foods and their nutritional value. We encourage students to bring snacks with reusable plastic containers and fabric lunch bags. Some suggested snacks include raw vegetables, crackers, and fruit! Suggested drinks include water, milk, chocolate milk, or 100% juice.

If you have any questions or concerns, please phone me at PWES at 250-851-0632 oe email at: barobertson@sd73.bc.ca.
