Week before Christmas
We have several activities and outings planned for the next week and a half. Please let me know if you would like to help out with skating, the craft days, or our trip to Falcon Lanes. Please indicate by sending the bottom part of the newsletter back to school with your child.
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 16TH AND THURSDAY, DECEMBER 18TH: CRAFT DAYS
Division's One, Two, and Three (Anderson, Robertson, and Sewell) will be rotating through three different craft stations. On both days, crafts will be from 10:30 - 12:00 and 1:00 - 1:45. Rather than charging students for crafts, we would like students to bring the following items. The starred items (*) are the ones every student needs to bring; the other items are if you have them:
^ Small baggie of candies plus 10 graham crackers (for gingerbread houses)*
^ Wallet size photo *
^ Puzzle pieces (will be painted and used for a craft)
^ Old Christmas Cards (will be cut up for a craft)
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 17TH: SKATING IN MORNING/GOTCHA REWARD?
We will be going skating in the morning, leaving at 10:00 and returning by 12:15. Our students have been working towards a school-wide goal of achieving 750 "Gotchas" for appropriate hallway behaviour. Ask your child about this.
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 19TH: BOWLING AT FALCON LANES AND PJ AND MOVIE DAY.
Our classes will be watching Lord of the Flies when we return from bowling. They will be watching Lord of the Flies as part of a culminating activity for Social Studies.
Thank you for your continued support. Again, please indicate below if you would like to help in the class on any of the above mentioned days.
Happy Holidays!

Writing Centres
A couple of weeks ago, we started writing centres. Students will move between 5 different writing centres and styles. Students will use persuasive writing, expository writing, and descriptive writing.
Centre 1 - The first activity, "Comic Author" requires the student to choose four comic strips, interpret the picture and fill in the captions with their own dialogue.
Centre 2 - The second activity, "Adopt-A-Pet" requires the student to choose one of the classified ads for pets and write a letter to their parent or guardian in order to convince them why they should be allowed to bring that pet home.
Centre 3 - The third activity, "Letter to the Editor" requires the student to either answer the letters to the editor provided OR write a new letter to the editor using one of the issues provided. Students also have the option of writing about any other issue that they feel strongly about.
Centre 4 - The fourth activity, "Column Creation" students view the newspaper photographs provided and choose one to write a newspaper story about. Must describe the picture.
Centre 5 - The first part of the final activity, "Reporter for the Day" requires the student to read one of the articles provided and create a fitting headline. In the second part of the activity, the students are provided with the headline and they must create a story to correspond to it.
