Poetry Writing

We have started our poetry writing unit!

Students are to write 11 different poems, but a total of 15 to hand in.  They may do up to 3 bonus.

Everyone has been provided with the marking criteria.  Each poem will be out of 4 (1 - not yet meeting expectations, 2 - minimally meeting, 3 - fully meeting, 4 - exceeding expectations).  Total of 60 marks.

Each poem needs to be decorated, 1 mark for each poem decorated (picture, sketch, coloured, etc.).  Total of 15 marks.

Whole poetry booklet is worth 75 marks.

Dates:

1.  3 poems to be written by May 11th
2.  5 poems to be written by May 17th
3.  5 poems to be written by May 25th
4.  last 2 poems to be written and good copies done and handed in by June 1st.


Poems that need to be written:

1.  Tree poem using personification (4 - 6 lines)

2.  Alliteration poem (6 lines, more than 1 word per line)

3.  Riddle poem (about a creature, 4 - 6 lines)

4.  2 Cinquain's (5 lines - 2, 4, 6, 8, 2 syllables for each line)

5.  Those Eyes (choose a creature and describe the eyes and end with "if only we could see through those eyes nothing on this planet could ever be the same" and draw a picture of the creatures eyes)

6.  Sing me a Song (nonsense poem.  4 Stanza's, 7 - 8 lines per stanza, lines 4 and 7 or 8 must rhyme)

7.  3 Haiku (3 lines, 5, 7, 5, syllables for each line.  About nature)

8. 1 Diamante (2 patterns to choose from)

9.  Free Verse (at least 12 lines, no rhyme pattern, no set rhythm, way of conveying ideas and feelings, carefully crafted word picture)

10.  2 Tanka (5 lines, 5, 7, 5, 7, 7, syllables for each line.  About love, nature, sadness, seasons.  MUST USE metaphor, simile, or personification)

11.  If I were in charge of the world (4 stanza's, 4 - 7 lines per stanza)
